Hyundai Kona SUV – Decidedly Different!
Probably the most noticeable SUV on our roads, the Hyundai KONA SUV takes you where you need to be in comfort and safety – not to mention the shape of the body, the ready-to-go stance, the proportions, which all shout ‘style’. Now with new engine/ transmission options, even the Hyundai KONA base model is more car than most, while the Hyundai KONA top model will blow you away. Each variant gives you more of what you want and exactly what you need. The new Hyundai KONA is slightly smaller than the Creta, but stands on its own with looks and performance within the pantheon of new Hyundai vehicles.
The SUV is the car everyone wants now and the Hyundai KONA is the pinnacle of the most popular of these, the compact SUV. Before you consider anything else – do yourself a favour and book a test drive of the new KONA of your choice today.
“The Korean has a trick up its sleeve, it offers a comprehensive list of standard equipment compared to its Germanic and Japanese rivals. Initial impressions are good, and definitely an improved product over the model we drove three years ago.”
“The seating position is lower than in a typical crossover, which instils a sportier feel than a practically-minded perched position does. The ride quality is good across tar and gravel surfaces, something that Hyundai has really refined in its latest generation of vehicles.”
“The KONA has edgy, futuristic styling that breaks the normal SUV mould. Its slit-eyed headlamps and tail lights are distinctly Alfa-esque in nature…”
Hyundai KONA Engine Specs

Hyundai Kona South African Review
We were lucky enough to be one of the first Hyundai Dealerships to receive the base to top KONA models, and we decided to put it to the test. Of course, we are avowed Hyundai fans, but that does not take away from the fact that anybody who sets eyes on the KONA will be taken in by its futuristic style. In fact, we’d even go as far as saying that we’ve never seen something quite like it in South Africa before. Although SUV’s are well-known for their personality, the New Hyundai KONA takes this to another level. Ok, so now that we’ve sung its praises in general let’s get down to the nitty-gritty.
The Kona is a Looker!
If you don’t want to be the centre of attention then this is the wrong vehicle for you! Everywhere we went people stopped to stare at the funky good looks and outstanding stylings that make up the KONA’s exterior looks. The attention to detail of the vehicle’s exterior by designer Luc Donckerwolke is out of this world and we don’t think we’ve ever seen anything like it in a Hyundai or any other vehicle in South Africa. But for all of this, the KONA is still an SUV, so these good looks are underlined by a sporty yet slightly eccentric aggressiveness that would look as good in Camps bay as it does in Durbanville. This is a middle-class car with upper-class aspirations and this good looking vehicle is not afraid to show it.
Comfort and Convenience Comes Standard!
Many vehicles profess to offer exceptional levels of comfort and convenience, but with the features found in the base and top model KONA, Hyundai has most certainly put its money where its mouth is. This is an SUV that talks the talk and walks the walk, as this jaw-dropping list of Hyundai KONA features will testify to:
- Aux / iPod / USB Connection
- 4 Speakers and 2 Tweeters
- Ambient Temperature Display
- Electric Side Mirrors
- Electric Windows
- Sunglass Holder
- Driver and Passenger Vanity Mirror
- Cruise Control
- Rear View Camera & RPDC Park Assist
- Roof Rails
So How Does it Handle?
The KONA is a dream to drive both in the city and on the open road. It is lower than most SUVs, which makes it as comfortable as a hatchback. It feels wonderfully big inside, whilst being small and nippy in traffic. Its firm ride is great in the city and off-road, while its handling is clear and precise.
