Some people said it would never happen again, but Hyundai Motorsport has proven all of the naysayers wrong and has once again taken first place in a FIA World Rally Championship (WRC) Race, this time in Argentina (the first time was in 2014 during the ADAC Rallye Deutschland).
Hayden Paddon and John Kennard from team Hyundai have thrown down the literal gauntlet and put the next generation Hyundai i20 WRC through its paces to claim an outright victory by a massive 14.3 seconds. This fantastic result not only marks Hayden Paddon’s debut win in the WRC, but it is also the first overall victory for Hyundai Motorsport’s latest New Generation i20 WRC vehicle in what is officially only its fourth outing. This means that 2016 is without a doubt their most competitive start in the WRC, and has cemented Hyundai Motorsport’s second place in the Manufacturers’ Championship.
When interviewed about the race after this monumental win, Hayden Paddon had this to say about what could turn out to be one of the most important races ever for the Hyundai i20 WRC:
“I can’t believe it! I really didn’t think we were going to be able to hang on. It all came down to the Power Stage and we pushed really hard. It was particularly special to pull out that performance on El Condor. We’ve worked a lot on that stage because I’ve not been particularly strong on the tight and twisty stages. We drove the wheels off the car. It’s a lot to take in at the moment. It’s a fantastic result for me, John and the whole team. A huge amount of work has gone into the New Generation i20 WRC. I knew from the first test that we could win with it. I just didn’t quite expect it to be so soon.”
The next round of the 2016 FIA World Rally Championship is the Rally de Portugal, which takes place over the period 19-22 May. The Hyundai Motorsport Team is preparing to continue their current winning momentum and establish the New Generation i20 WRC as the car to beat in 2016.
