The Hyundai Motor Group has announced the appointment of their new global Chief Operating Officer, José Muñoz. The former Nissan Chief Performance Officer will now oversee global operations strategy and implementation primarily focusing on improving brand performance and ensuring profitable growth. Muñoz will report directly to Hyundai’s top leadership based in Seoul while but he is based in Fountain Valley, California.
José Muñoz is 53 years old and a native of Spain with a PhD in nuclear engineering from Polytechnic University of Madrid and an MBA from Instituto de Empresa (IE) Business School in Madrid. Along the way, he also completed executive management programs at Cranfield School of Management in the UK and INSEAD Business School in France. Fluent in English, Spanish and French, José Muñoz is well-educated, vastly experienced and highly rated in the automotive world.

Muñoz joined Nissan in 2004 and during his time helped the automaker achieve significant growth and record sales within his regions. While he left Nissan in January on a leave of absence to help with “special tasks” into the Ghosn investigation, he actually left the company entirely.
As the new Chief Operating Officer for Hyundai, Muñoz is an important addition as they attempt to further solidify their overseas business. Wonhee Lee, president of Hyundai Motor Company, said this of their new COO:

Judging from his extensive experience in automotive and technology, the Hyundai Motor Group should feel confident in his abilities. So much so that Muñoz was named President and CEO of Hyundai Motor North America and Hyundai Motor America. He will be responsible for the entire American market, including Hyundai Motor North, Central and South America, as the Head of Hyundai Motor Americas Region.
